Devil's Hand Gesture 

Similar to that given by the Hierophant as a blessing, the gesture made by the Devil in many decks is indicative of a guide that leads to a wrong oath.

Dignity/Dignified 

These terms refer to the value or worth applied to a card. Dignified means an upright card as opposed to a reversed one.

Dionysian 

Relating to the god Dionysus, a deity associated in particular with wine and ecstasy.

Divination 

The practice of gaining insight though esoteric methods, including reading the Tarot, astrology, ritual and many other techniques.

Dog 

The appearance of a dog in the cards is a symbol of loyalty or alternatively base instincts.

Dove 

A representation of the Christian Holy Spirit of peace, a figure that embodies innocence, beauty and simplicity.

Dualism 

The idea that the universe is composed of opposites or contrasting aspects, such as dark and light, good and evil, matter and spirit. For many practitioners, the goal of Tarot is to harmonise such contradictions.
